BrainTrails Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 2026

BrainTrails is a note-taking app for iPhone, iPad and Mac. In short: your notes are yours. We don't collect, see, sell or share any of your data, there are no accounts, no ads and no tracking.

Your notes

Trails, notes, photos, drawings and replies are stored on your device. If you're signed in to iCloud, they also sync through your own private iCloud database, so they're available on your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. That database belongs to your iCloud account: we can't read it, and its storage counts toward your iCloud plan. Apple's handling of iCloud data is described in Apple's privacy policy.

Location

If you allow it, BrainTrails saves where each note was written, so you can see it in Get Info and on the Map, Places and Calendar views. Locations are stored with your notes, on your devices and in your private iCloud, and nowhere else. You can turn this off in the app's Settings at any time, or deny location access in the system settings.

Camera and photos

The camera is used only when you choose to take a photo for a note. Photos you pick from your library are added to the note you choose; BrainTrails doesn't read the rest of your library.

Link previews

When a note contains a web link, BrainTrails can show the page's title and image, using Apple's link preview service, as Messages does. Getting a preview contacts that website, which can see your device's IP address, like opening the page would. Previews are cached on your device only. You can turn link previews off in the app's Settings.

Widgets, Siri and sharing

The widget, the Control Center control, Siri and Shortcuts, and the share extension work on your device. Items you share into BrainTrails from other apps are saved into your notes and nowhere else.

Analytics and third parties

BrainTrails contains no analytics, advertising or tracking code, and no third-party services that collect data.

Deleting your data

Delete notes or trails in the app, or everything at once in Settings › Storage › Delete All Data, which removes it from all your devices and your iCloud. Deleting the app removes the data on that device.

Children

BrainTrails doesn't collect any personal information, from anyone, including children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be published on this page with a new date.
